What’s The Biggest Mistake In Web Design?
Kevin O’Keefe at Real Lawyers Have Blogs points us to Vincent Flanders’ post titled the ‘Biggest mistakes in web design 1995-2015.’ I thought it was interesting how it goes all the way to 2015, because the same mistakes will be repeated over and over. If you don’t believe me, look to 1995-2006 and tell me if it hasn’t been the case thus far.The top mistake is one that every lawyer believes, and that it suffering from the delusional thought that people care about you and your web site. The truth is that they don’t care at all about you, your web site, or how wonderful your staff looks against a backdrop of library book. What they care about is (drum roll, please) finding a solution to a problem.
So when you’re looking to create or update a web site, ask yourself what problems the site solves. If it doesn’t provide information necessary to solve a problem, it’s a waste of space and time. People will walk away from the site, never to return.
Two thirds of people coming to a law firm website, blogs included, are looking for practical legal information. They are not looking for information about the law firm and its lawyers.
That is precisely why legal blogs draw far more traffic than law firm websites. Blogs offer people the information they need, not some mindless blather about the lawyer or the firm.
