Want an iPhone? Maybe Not.

by Jay Fleischman on November 14, 2007

OK, I admit that I’ve got a serious case of iPhone envy. It’s a thing of beauty, and I covet it. Haven’t bought one for a variety of reasons (I just got a BlackBerry a month before the iPhone was released and I can’t justify the second investment just quite yet) but it’s got the cool factor I look for.

But wait – that iPhone may not be the be all and end all. You may have heard about the gPhone, Google’s answer to the cell phone. Rumors abounded until our friends in Mountain View announced Android, an open-source platform for cell phones. I wasn’t convinced until I saw this video, which lets me know for sure that Apple is not going to have an easy road in the long run.

Google bought Android in 2005, acquiring a wealth of knowledge as well as the founder of Danger (the folks who brought us the Sidekick). The plans for the company were kept under wraps until last week when the big announcement was made. Now T-Mobile, the same company that partnered with Danger to release the Sidekick (wise move, T-Mobile!), has opted to partner with Google by offering phones powered by Android.

The wireless market is heating up, folks. Nobody knows for sure who will win, but I think it’s pretty clear that Microsoft should be very worried. Vista is a dog, Apple now accounts for over 8% of the notebook market (and is growing), the Zune (now on v.2 in case anyone cares) is a no-show at the mobile music party, and applications (such as MyThirdWave) are moving online.
